1958 GMC* Apache
|
My dad bought it for me for about $500 when I was 16. We saw it near our house and he asked if I was interested. I replied, "Only if we fix it up right." He agreed, but "fixing it right" must be a relative term. :) We got the engine running, replaced the motor mounts, the fuel pump, the radiator, (when the motor broke the original motor mounts and launched into it) put on new tires, new windshield and passenger glass window. We took off the camper shell that came with it. I bought several 3M grinding/sanding disks and took a drill to all the rust I saw. Then we painted it Walmart blue. $25 for a case of paint. When I got it, it had been half white, half primer grey. (I'll post a picture of what it looked like then when I find it and scan it.) I drove it for two years like that in high school. Unfortunately, the truck started weaving all over the road, (needs a new front end) so we parked it. Then I went to LSU, got married, and ended up living in Baton Rouge until earlier this year when we bought our first house. It's been parked since then (1995) on Dad's land, where it's been moved a couple of times around the property, but it's always been outside. Since I've always wanted to restore this truck, I was able to bring it to our home recently. Here are some pictures of its arrival. I will post more text and pictures as things progress. First up is a good pressure-washing! :) Jason *Update: I've learned through helpful members of the oletrucks e-group, that my truck is not a Chevrolet like I've believed for the 9 years I've owned it, but a GMC that's been re-badged! My dash gauge cluster and serial number were the deciding factors! Somebody in the truck's past added a Chevy tailgate and grille to fool us though. :) |
